Dementia Care

Forgetting to add an ingredient to dinner easily happens. Forgetting that you put something on the stove entirely is a sign something may be wrong.

Caring for Dementia

Dementia is a loss of brain function that occurs with certain diseases. It affects memory, thinking, language, judgment, and behavior and usually occurs in those of an older age. Dementia most often first appears as "forgetfulness," with other early symptoms of difficulty performing tasks that used to come easily, getting lost on familiar routes, trouble remembering names and commonly misplacing items.

There is no cure for most cases of dementia, but receiving proper care can help. If you or a loved one have noticed any of these early signs, it is time to see a specialists.

Dementia: Diagnosis and Treatment

Your specialist will review your medical history and perform a complete physical exam, focusing heavily on the nervous system and give a mental function test. Other test, including lab tests, brain scans, psychiatric evaluation, may be ordered to better find out the root cause of your memory loss.

Treatment is dependent on the condition causing the dementia. Although there is no cure, medication and therapy can help.

An educated caregiver will also play a major role in aiding in treatment. There may come a point where skilled nursing care becomes required.
