Connecticut's Gastrointestinal Experts
Led by the Connecticut Gastroenterology Institute located at Bristol Hospital, our gastreonterology department is home to some of the most respected gastroenterologists in the nation. Many of the procedures we pioneered are available nowhere else in the state.
Our diagnostic tests and tools are the most advanced and comprehensive available. From colonoscopy (recommended every 10 years for those aged 50 and older) to advanced motility studies and capsule endoscopy using the PillCam (pioneered by Connecticut Gastroenterology Institute founding director, Salam F. Zakko, MD), we offer testing to diagnose any kind of gastrointestinal disorder.
Should I See a GI Expert?

Reasons to see a gastroenterologist vary widely, and our knowledge and experience are just as diverse. We treat any condition of the intestines, esophagus, liver, pancreas, colon or rectum — from common but potentially serious conditions, such as gastrointestinal reflux (GERD) and gallstones, to pancreatic and liver disorders requiring advanced treatment. We understand what you’re going through, and we’ll do everything in our power to bring you relief and healing.
What is GERD?
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is the most common gastrointestinal-related diagnosis made by physicians during clinical visits in the U.S. It is estimated that pain and discomfort from acid reflux impacts over 80 million Americans at least once per month. The chronic condition occurs as a result of the gastroesophageal valve (GEV) allowing gastric contents to reflux (wash backwards) into the esophagus, causing heartburn and possible injury to the esophageal lining.
